Divock Origi scores 'one of the best consolation goals ever' as AC Milan thumped 5-2

Divock Origi could have trademarked his ability to come off the bench and find the back of the net, and while he did just that for AC Milan, it was still far too late

Divock Origi found the top corner in sumptuous style for AC Milan - unfortunately, it did not save the Rossoneri from a complete hammering.

The defending Serie A champions have not won any of their last six matches in all competitions. Their humiliating 4-0 away defeat to Lazio was followed up by an equally wretched 5-2 defeat at home to Sassuolo.

Stefano Pioli’s side are not only 15 points behind storming Serie A leaders Napoli, they have even dropped out of the Champions League places. However, if anybody in red and black was able to leave San Siro with a wry smile on their face, it was Origi.

The former Liverpool forward has been far from prolific ever since he secured a move to the European giants. He has only notched two goals in 13 appearances for Milan this season.

However, his second goal was certainly one to remember. Despite the ball appearing to be wedged under his feet, Origi used his flexibility to somehow unleash a curling effort from 25 yards which pinged, satisfyingly, off the bottom of the cross bar and into the back of the net.

If there was ever a rule change in football that saw wonder goals automatically win matches, then Origi would have certainly stolen the points for his side. Unfortunately for the Italian giants, we all live on planet earth, meaning Origi’s goal of dreams was significantly grounded by the fact the scoreline was still 5-2 in Sassuolo’s favour.

It certainly did little to raise the spirits of Pioli, who was desperately trying to keep spirits high in his post match interview. “At the moment, as soon as we suffer a blow we can’t manage to react,” Pioli said.

“I know that there’s not the same serenity as we had before, so we have to show that we can still have a good campaign and get into the Champions League … that will be our title. I will make and we will make as a club the best decisions.

“We have the derby now, we want to react and get out of this situation.” As well as a derby clash against fierce city rivals Inter Milan, AC Milan must also face Torino at the San Siro, before hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash on February 14.
