Celtic legend Scott Brown blasts Fleetwood side as ‘Sunday League’ as horror run of League One form continues

CELTIC hero Scott Brown has blasted his side’s football as “Sunday League” as Fleetwood’s horror run continues.

Brown’s team are in poor form, having picked up only one win from the previous six, while losing their last four on the trot in the league.

With Saturday’s game at the Highbury Stadium against Burton poised at 2-1 to the visitors, the ten-man Lancashire side thought they had grabbed an equaliser in injury time.

But the Parkhead hero saw his side dramatically concede not long after, with Albion nicking the win with a 96th minute sucker-punch.

The result leaves Fleetwood 17th in the table, but they're only a couple of points above the relegation places given how tight it is at the bottom of League One.

Brown wasn't holding back in his assessment after the game either as he got torn into his players, with the former Scotland skipper furious at how his side failed to hold on for the point.

Brown said: “I thought it was a horrible game; they made it ugly, and they went very direct. In the first half, we didn’t deal with it too badly, but in the second half we conceded three goals in 45 minutes - I don’t think we’ve conceded all season in a game.

“We go one nil up, lose a goal within in a minute, then get back into it at 2-2, and then you lose another goal.

“It’s about taking responsibility and that’s on the field, that’s being organised, becoming a team, being responsible, being in shape, being disciplined and understanding the game.

“That was schoolboy, that is Sunday League football. People think that can do what they want here and that’s not happening. That won’t happen again. I just can’t get my head around it.

"For us going forward if we think that’s acceptable, we’ve got a long way to go.”

The Hoops favourite was appointed to his first managerial position last year, taking over the League One club in May 2022.

Under Brown’s management, Fleetwood have won six, drawn 11 and lost 11 matches.

Renowned for his leadership qualities as a player, the head coach demanded more from his players.

They take on Sheffield Wednesday in an FA Cup replay midweek before visiting Charlton on league business next weekend.

“It's down to players taking responsibility on the park,” Brown added.

“You can talk about tactics as much as you want but that becomes defend your box, leadership and understanding the time of the game.

“We have sprinted up to go and get the ball, we’ve scored to get it back to 2-2, great finish by Promise [Omochere] - we expect to go and get the ball, get the ball down and we’ve got three strikers running to go and close it down, then we’ve got a back two.

“You’ve just scored a goal, it’s a time that teams are going to come for you. They get a boost, they want to go and score the winner, they’ve got 11 men, we’ve got ten, and we’ve got three attacking players that just go and do what they want.

“That’s when we have to have game management.”
