What Vertonghen said to Alderweireld as Tottenham icons played against each other in Belgium

Tottenham icons Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld were reunited in Belgium as Spurs fans got to witness their old favourites share a pitch once again.

The latter left Tottenham for Al-Duhail back in 2021, whereas Vertonghen departed N17 in 2020 when moving to Benfica.

Now, the pair find themselves back in their homeland of Belgium, where they met up once again as Vertonghen’s Anderlecht took on Alderweireld’s Royal Antwerp.

What’s the story?

Well, supporters were actually able to hear every word Vertonghen said during the game, as he was wearing a microphone.

With both the 35-year-old and Alderweireld captaining their side, they were involved in the pre-match coin toss.

As they stood on the halfway line ahead of kick-off, Vertonghen said to his old Tottenham teammate: “Ready mate? Warrior.”

The comment made Alderweireld chuckle as seen in the footage below.

Vertonghen also shared inside knowledge about the 33-year-old during the game, telling his Anderlecht teammate Zeno Debast that “Toby goes first post” as they defended a set-piece.

Vertonghen & Alderweireld are two of the best Tottenham will have

As Spurs fans watch the likes of Clement Lenglet and Davinson Sanchez struggle when called upon nowadays, they will surely look back and wish the Belgian duo were still starting alongside each other in north London.

Vertonghen made 315 appearances for Spurs across a six-year spell in N17, while Alderweireld racked up 236 outings for Tottenham in his eight years at Hotspur Way.

It is criminal that Tottenham failed to win a trophy with such a formidable pairing at the back, although that should not define their respective stints at Spurs.

Regardless of the lack of silverware, Vertonghen and Alderweireld are two of the best defenders to wear the shirt, and Tottenham fans will surely cherish the days where they led from the back.
