Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini hints at underdog mentality ahead of Manchester United clash
The Spanish side are flying high in La Liga and face Man United at Old Trafford on Thursday
Manuel Pellegrini believes his Real Betis side will be major underdogs going into Thursday's Europa League clash with Manchester United by claiming you 'can't compare' the two sides.
Betis travel to Old Trafford for the first leg of their last-16 tie with United, who beat Barcelona in the qualifying round last month. Erik ten Hag's side flew back from Catalonia with honours even before goals from Fred and Antony secured a 2-1 home win and a place in the next round.
Pellegrini's side didn't need a playoff round to secure their place in the round-of-16 draw, having topped their group prior to the World Cup break. The Seville-based side are punching above their weight once again this season, with Sunday's 0-0 draw at home to Real Madrid leaving them four games unbeaten and three points off the top four.

But victory for United over La Liga's top side highlights the difference between the two leagues, and Pellegrini is under no illusions over the task at hand.
“Much bigger," Pellegrini told the Guardian. when asked if Betis winning the Europa League would be as big as United winning the Champions League. "United have won it, they have a history. Betis have that desire but compete from an unfavourable position. You can’t compare Betis to United. Even getting the chance to face them is pure hope.”
Prior to his spells at Betis, Manchester City and West Ham United, Pellegrini spent one season in charge of Real Madrid where he oversaw Cristiano Ronaldo's first season with Los Blancos, the Portuguese forward netting 33 times in 35 games.
Ronaldo's return to United was much less successful, culminating in his departure over the winter after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan - a decision that seemingly sparked a turnaround in fortunes for United. But Pellegrini refused to link the two.
“Ronaldo’s presence is never a problem, because of his commitment, professionalism, ability, dedication, what he transmits," the Chilean added. "A new coach came, investment was made, changes. That’s not easy. It’s a process, not about a player. Ten Hag has a trophy now, his style fits. Hopefully things go well now – after this game.”
