Italian media give verdict on Oliver Skipp as Tottenham suffer defeat to AC Milan

Italian media outlet TMW were very honest in their ratings of Tottenham Hotspur’s players after Milan knocked Spurs out – and they even had criticism for Oliver Skipp, despite the star being one of his side’s better players on the night.

Skipp, 22, continued in the middle of the park on Wednesday night with Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma out through injury. The England U21 midfielder was decent enough in the middle of the park, at least doing his job.

Indeed, Spurs did keep a clean sheet and Skipp was used more as a holding midfielder to allow Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to get forward at times. He made a number of fouls when needed, and his passing was solid and crisp throughout.

While TMW handed him a 6/10 rating for his performance – the biggest they handed out in terms of player ratings – they did have some criticism. They feel that the England U21 midfielder lacks the technical ability required at this level.

“He runs a lot in the middle of the pitch, you find him chasing his opponents and sinking the save. He leaves a bit to be desired on a technical level, but when it comes to battle he responds present,” TMW reported in their verdict of Skipp.

While criticism of Skipp is harsh, given he was one of Tottenham’s better performers on the night, it is fair to say that he lacks the technical ability of Rodrigo Bentancur. While Skipp is impressing, Bentancur’s absence is certainly felt.

Indeed, the Uruguayan’s ability to turn defence into attack in transition would have helped Spurs get on the attack quicker than Skipp and Hojbjerg did. But, when Bentancur is back, perhaps it will be Skipp and Bentancur first choice.
