Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 'approached' by Gareth Southgate over England role

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is said to be in advanced talks over joining Gareth Southgate's England coaching set-up as their Euro 2024 preparations get underway this month

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is said to be in advanced talks over joining Gareth Southgate's England coaching team - 17 years after they played together.

The former Chelsea, Leeds and Atletico Madrid striker played with Southgate at Middlesbrough between 2004 and 2006, taking up his own coaching career in 2011.

With Southgate coaching Middlesbrough before moving into the England set-up, the pair could be reunited with a spot opening up in the Three Lions backroom staff.

Sky Sports report that Hasselbaink, who has been out of work since his second spell with Burton Albion came to an end, is in talks with the FA.

With Chris Powell leaving the England set-up after his contract came to an end after the World Cup, the former Charlton boss is said to be concentrating on his head of coaching role at Tottenham's academy.

Hasselbaink will already be familiar with England's St George's Park training base, which is in Burton, having also coached Royal Antwerp, QPR and Northampton.

With Southgate linked with an England exit after the World Cup, he pledged to stay on until after the next major tournament in Germany next year.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said: "We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign.

"Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now."

England take on Italy on March 23 and Ukraine on March 26 in their first two games of the qualification stage, with their group including Malta and North Macedonia.

England go into the tournament among the favourites having lost in the final on penalties in 2021 and in the World Cup quarter-finals in December.

Harry Kane will captain the team into their upcoming fixtures, needing one more goal to eclipse Wayne Rooney as the all time record Three Lions goalscorer.
