19-year-old ‘next Skipp’ spotted in Tottenham training ahead of Southampton clash

As Tottenham Hotspur prepare to face Southampton on Saturday, Matthew Craig has been spotted training with the first-team.

The 19-year-old is a defensive midfielder by trade, who is also capable of slotting in as a central defender. It seems like more and more youngsters at the club are getting a chance to display their talents, as has been the case with Brooklyn Lyons-Foster and Maksim Paskotski.

Now, the same is the case with Matthew Craig, who has been seen training with the Tottenham senior side ahead of their contest against Southampton.

Described as an ‘intelligent’ and ‘tigerish’ midfielder by blogger Superhotspur, the teenager has also been labelled as the ‘next [Oliver] Skipp’ by Football Fan Cast.

Ultimately, that very comparison is a big one considering how highly Antonio Conte seems to rate the Englishman, as he seemingly blocked his loan spell this season.

On Getty Images, Matthew Craig has been pictured sprinting towards the ball in Tottenham training, as well as alongside Emerson Royal and Harry Kane in preparation for their clash against Southampton.

As Spurs prepare to build on their convincing 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest, the Scottish U-21 international has been involved in proceedings.

Matthew Craig could be a missing profile in the Spurs side

While Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr are neat and tidy on the ball, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is an out-and-out destroyer, the side desperately lack an expansive passer in the middle of the park.

Considering Matthew Craig is known to showcase this very attribute from the centre of midfield, he could be a huge asset for Tottenham in the future, as there is little to no chance that he features against Southampton.

With the Scot known to be an adept carrier of the ball as well, his traits would actually benefit the Lilywhites as a lot as he could help them progress up the pitch much more seamlessly than they currently do.

Perhaps, this could be a reality one day.
