Chris Kamara has revealed he urged Jose Mourinho to move for Virgil van Dijk - when the Dutchman was impressing at Southampton.

Mourinho was at the helm of Manchester United in 2017, when Liverpool and Manchester City were competing for Van Dijk's signature. And speaking on Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast, Kamara notes he urged Mourinho to go and get the Dutchman.

Kamara said: "I can exclusively reveal that I told Jose [Mourinho] to take him to Manchester United and Jose said, 'These lot won't give me the money for him.' Yeah, and he went to Liverpool."

Liverpool's signing of Van Dijk in 2017 was for a world record £75million. However, he transformed the fortunes of the Reds, with Liverpool finally getting their hands on a Premier League title with the Dutchman a key part of the squad.

In that time, United won their fair share of spoils, but a Premier League title has still eluded the Red Devils.

Instead, United signed Harry Maguire the following summer, who had impressed at Leicester and with England at the 2018 World Cup.
