Aston Villa centre-back Diego Carlos played 67 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly with Bristol Rovers at Bodymoor Heath on Friday.

The Brazilian ruptured his Achilles tendon back in August, and is yet to make a return to Premier League action. He was named on the bench for Villa's recent league games against West Ham and Bournemouth, and has stepped up his recovery by featuring in a 3-1 defeat to League One side Rovers.

Villa went 3-0 down in the friendly before youngster Omari Kellyman reduced the deficit late in the second half. Midfielder Leander Dendoncker also started the match after recently being ruled out of action through a domestic injury.
