Former England international Carlton Palmer has provided fans with an update on his health after being kept in hospital overnight following the Sheffield half marathon

Carlton Palmer has confirmed he suffered a heart attack as the former England international gave an update on his health situation.

The ex-Sheffield Wednesday star had announced on Twitter on Monday morning that he had been kept in hospital overnight after his "heart played up" during the Sheffield half marathon on Sunday. Palmer had been participating in the event alongside his wife Lucy to raise money for their charity - Cavendish Cancer Care.

He has now offered an update on his status to his followers, tweeting: "Thank you so much for all the lovely messages I have being kept in hospital with a suspected small heart attack, they want to find out what has caused this problem so tests are ongoing.

"I will keep you updated. Gutted, I was flying to Portugal at 4pm with @LucyPal16907599."

Palmer had managed to finish the race on Sunday in a time of two hours, nine minutes and 21 seconds despite revealing his problems had started in the first mile.

After crossing the finish line, he sought medical help before his social media update on Monday morning. Palmer initially wrote: "Just to let everyone know I am ok, being kept in overnight in hospital observation/tests heart played up again in the first mile but I managed to complete the course. Congratulations to my gorgeous wife for going sub two hours love you."

The 57-year-old has previously had health issues with his heart and was forced to undergo surgery on the organ back in 2016.

As a player, Palmer scored once in 18 caps for England and was a member of the Three Lions' squad for the 1992 European Championships in Sweden.

At club level, he made over 250 appearances in the Premier League for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Southampton before retiring in 2004.

He has since had spells in management, starting with Mansfield Town between 2004 and 2005. Palmer returned to the dugout for a brief stint in charge of non-league Grantham Town in 2021 but has not managed another club since.
