The Newcastle icon who kicked lumps out of the advertising boards at a game is now aiming for Euro 2024 glory with Cyprus.

On this day, March 31, 1998, Temuri Ketsbaia showed unbridled passion after scoring a last-minute winner against Bolton Wanderers. The Georgian came off the bench to hit home the match clincher and raced over to the Toon faithful to celebrate in a unique way.

He whipped off his shirt and proceeded to kick lumps off of the advertising boards in front of him. A McDonald’s sign was his first victim, before he took out his rage on an Adidas one, to the delight of fans who cheered wildly as he stormed off bare-chested.

He later explained that he was letting out the pent-up frustration that had built up while he sat on the bench for the game, one he was desperate to start.

At the time, Ketsbaia said: "Sometimes when you score a goal and there is some disappointment and you express yourself in the wrong way. It was a bad moment for me.

"Even when you score a goal, even at that moment, sometimes bad things can happen - not bad things, I just lost my control. I did much better things in Newcastle, and people only remember this one!"

And now, Ketsbaia plans to use his passion to inspire Cyprus to glory at Euro 2024, after becoming the nation's boss last summer. But he's got his work cut out after losing his troops lost 3-0 to Scotland in Group A last week.

Cyprus' plight worsened when Nicholas Ioannou was sent off for dissent, and Ketsbaia will be hoping he can get his team in order ahead of their next Euro game against Georgia in June.
