‘Cheeky’: Andy Cole makes Allan Saint-Maximin claim as Newcastle beat Man United

Andy Cole has lauded Allan Saint-Maximin for being ‘really positive’ during Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday at St James’ Park.

The legendary striker stated that when Allan Saint-Maximin is in the form he was against Manchester United, then he is ‘consistent’ in his play for Eddie Howe’s Champions League-chasing team.

The only thing missing from the all-action star was a goal because his performance was deserving of it against Erik ten Hag’s men.

But whilst he couldn’t get on the scoresheet, he still managed to provide the assist for Joe Willock, who opened the scoring with a close-range header – Paul Scholes spoke in a positive fashion about the trickster on Newcastle’s flanks.

Whilst the Toon Army faithful always knew that Saint-Maximin has the talent, the one criticism has always been aimed at him is the inconsistency in his game.

Well, Andy Cole, who wowed the Newcastle crowd during his playing days, thinks Saint-Maximin showcased that consistent form on Sunday, as he told Premier League Productions (02/04/23 at 5:25 pm).

“Yeah, he (Saint-Maximin) is cheeky,” said Cole. “When he is on this form, then he is consistent. You look at what he’s doing, if he can’t commit a pass, then he is taking someone on.

“Sometimes he gives the ball away in good areas, but now he has been really positive.”

COMPETITION HELPS SAINT-MAXIMIN

Previously, the 26-year-old, alongside striker Callum Wilson, was the only positive light in the final third and the one who the Newcastle players needed to give the ball near-on every time.

But that has now changed under Eddie Howe because there are better players in attack, from summer signing Alexander Isak to the much-improved, Miguel Almiron.

Well, if you add January capture Anthony Gordon to the mix, then Saint-Maximin has some completion on his hands and it might just help bring that consistency out of his game.
