Alan Shearer opens up on relationship with David Ginola after 'huge' dressing room spat

The Newcastle United legend was quick to highlight a big point of contention between the pair soon after he'd arrived at St. James' Park.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has revealed how him and his former teammate David Ginola had a big dressing room argument just two months after the England international arrived at St. James' Park.

The pair only spent one full season together at the Magpies but did combine for some excellent goals - although they didn't get along straight away.

Shearer put Ginola last on his list of the greatest French players to have ever played in the Premier League but backed up his reasoning very quickly.

"David Ginola, Alan. You've put your teammate, you've put him last. What does that say about David?" Gary Lineker asked on the latest episode of the Match of the Day Top 10.

"The only reason, the only reason I've done that is - there's no doubt on his ability - but it's the things the other players on the list have won," Shearer claimed.

"Oh, so it's not anything personal then?" Lineker responded.

"No, no, not at all," Shearer confirmed.

"I do recall you on a previous podcast saying that he didn't always cross the ball when you wanted him to cross it," Lineker cheekily replied.

"That's a very good point," Shearer acknowledged. "I think I probably only had about a year with David because Kevin [Keegan] left, and once Kevin left, I don't think he wanted to be at Newcastle.

"After that, I don't think it meant much to David anymore because Kevin had meant so much to him, did so much for him and what have you. Then Kenny Dalglish came in, and it was slightly different because Kenny was a different type of manager."

"Kenny wasn't a fan?" Lineker asked.

"What was different between Kenny and Kevin was that Kevin would give David the freedom to do what he wanted, he didn't want him tracking back. But Kenny was more of a 'team-game' manager.

"But yeah, I had a huge row with David once after joining Newcastle. After about five, six games, he hadn't put any crosses in at all so I thought 'I'm going at him here'.

"I went in after the game, I said to him, 'I sat at home watching Newcastle last season and you crossed, and crossed, and crossed so many balls for Les Ferdinand'.

"And he didn't like what I said. He had a right go at me, but that was it then. He started crossing, it was a lot better."
