Dunfermline PROMOTED back to Championship at first time of asking as they seal League One title in stunning style

DUNFERMLINE have sealed promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

The Pars were relegated to League One last season but will return to the second tier for the next campaign after running away with the title.

James McPake’s men did so in stunning style, as they ruthlessly put away Queen of the South.

The runaway table toppers put the Doonhamers to the sword with a five star performance on the big day, winning 5-0.

Kane Richie-Hosler, Matthew Todd, Craig Wighton and Paul Allan grabbed the goals on a memorable day at East End Park.

It was 2-0 at half-time before the hosts put on a scintillating second half showing for the home fans.

Despite tumbling into the third tier it’s been a positive year for Dunfermline, with sell-out crowds for the derby matches against Falkirk a highlight.

McPake picked up the manager of the month award twice in the process, with Wighton the top scorer after bagging 14 goals.

The race for the title was a three-horse one for much of the campaign, with the Bairns and Airdrie running the Pars close until recent weeks.

A solid defence was the foundation for their success, with just 19 goals conceded up to this point, comfortably the best in the division.

They were potent at the other end too, with 58 goals scored in total.

The Pars have also lost just the once all season.

It means that even if they lost the remaining three games on the fixture schedule, second-placed Falkirk couldn’t catch them.

The battle for the remaining promotion place seems to be Falkirk, Airdrie and Alloa. Queen of the South’s heavy loss to the new champions today may leave them with too much ground to make up, being six points behind fourth-placed Alloa.

The teams that finish from second to fourth will face off against one another in the mini play-off tournament, with the winner meeting whoever finishes second-bottom of the Championship.

Hamilton Accies currently occupy that spot, six points ahead of Cove Rangers at the bottom of the table. Arbroath are in eighth, four points ahead of Accies.
