Callum Davidson sacking explained as St Johnstone chairman opens up on ‘extremely difficult decision’

THE St Johnstone chairman has explained the club’s decision to sack double-winning boss Callum Davidson.

The Perth club announced that they had axed the 44-year-old manager after yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to Livingston left the side facing a relegation dogfight.

Davidson, who guided the Saints to a historic League Cup and Scottish Cup double in 2021, had looked to have turned the corner after last season’s relegation scare.

After overcoming Inverness in the play-offs, he revamped the McDiarmid Park squad and had them dreaming of a top six finish prior to the World Cup break.

But since then their form has stuttered, winning just twice since December 17 when they defeated Ross County in the last game before the league shutdown.

In a statement released the club revealed the reason behind Davidson’s surprising exit, with chairman Steve Brown saying: “First and foremost, Callum is a friend and I hold him in high regard which is why this has been an extremely difficult decision to come to.

“But we had an open and honest conversation and we both agreed that we must do what is right for St Johnstone.

“We must always put our Football Club first.

“Callum has been a brilliant manager for St Johnstone and led us to that Cup Double in 2021 and then European football.

“But we feel results haven’t been good enough in recent weeks and it’s best for the Football Club to make a change at this stage.

“I’d like to thank Callum for his service and dedication to us and wish him every success in the future.

“He is a St Johnstone legend and always will be.”

The club also confirmed that assistant manager Steven MacLean will take interim charge until further notice.

He will be joined alongside ex-player Liam Craig for the next six matches with the two tasked with preserving the club’s Premiership status.
