JASON CUMMINGS is at the centre of a major transfer battle in India.

That's after Mumbai City joined champions Mohun Bagan in a bidding war to sign the former Scotland striker.

The ex-Hibs, Rangers and Dundee maverick hitman looks set to leave Central Coast Mariners after resurrecting his career Down Under.

Cummings, 27, scored 17 goals for his club in just 25 appearances this season and has a release clause, despite having a year left on his contract.

Current I-League champions Mohun Bagan have offered Cummings £9,500-a-week to move to Indian football, but they are now trying to fight off ambitious rivals Mumbai City.

Mumbai City - who have former Aberdeen and Rangers forward Greg Stewart in their team too - are managed by English coach Des Buckingham, but lost in the play-off, semi-finals this year with Mohan Bagan snatching their title from them.

And they have launched an ambitious bid to persuade Cummings - who played at the World Cup for Australia last year after previously representing Scotland - to sign for them instead.

Mumbai City are backed by the City Football Group and want to make Cummings their marquee signing for the new season.

The lucrative offer on the table from Mohun Bagan would make Cummings the third highest-paid player in all of Indian football.

Uruguayan star Adrian Luna, who plays for Kerala Blasters, is the highest earner in the ISL on a healthy £13,000-a week pay packet.

Club chiefs at Central Coast Mariners have admitted there will be plenty of interest in Cummings on the way.

Owner Richard Peli said: “Who knows where Jason will end up but there’s a good chance he will go.

"I really hope he stays and we are able to sign him up for another two years.

"He currently has a year left and I hope he agrees to stay for at least that amount of time.

"But if he does go I’d be surprised if it was India - it would have to be a big money offer."
