Danny Rose slates Kieran Trippier before arranging catch-up with old pal live on TV

Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier shared some good-natured banter following their former club Tottenham’s embarrassing 6-1 defeat against a rampant Newcastle United side

Former Tottenham team-mates Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose enjoyed some friendly banter following their former side’s thrashing at Newcastle – and even arranged to go out for a drink.

Trippier, now of Newcastle, played his part as the Spurs were put to the sword. In a match between two teams gunning for a Champions League spot, rudderless Tottenham were torn apart by Eddie Hearn’s side, who were incredibly 5-0 up inside 21 minutes after goals from Jacob Murphy (two), Joelinton and Alexander Isak (two).

Harry Kane pulled a goal back soon after the break before Magpies substitute Callum Wilson made it 6-1 midway through the second half at a jubilant St James' Park.

After the match, Trippier joined Rose and fellow Sky Sports pundits Kieron Dyer and Jamie Redknapp. As they discussed the game, Rose made a jibe about the quality – or alleged lack of – of Trippier’s set-piece delivery. The former Atletico Madrid defender saw the funny side though, even confirming the pair will be meeting up for a drink soon.

Then, following the interview, as Trippier walked off, the pair had a quick private chat, presumably firming up their social plans, all in view of the camera, with Dyer and Redknapp looking on awkwardly.

The exchange was picked up by fans, with one tweeting: “Just decided to go to bed thirty minutes into the first half. Woke up to Rose and Trippier inviting each other out for drinks.”

During the broadcast, Rose had opened up about how he had avoided the game following his departure from Watford at the start of the season, and another fan said: “I think Danny Rose needs more than just a few drinks with Trippier next week. Looks a little lost.”

Another concerned tweeter added: “Yeah, Danny Rose is definitely not right, asking Trippier to go for a drink next weekend live on air even Trippier got awkward and walked off.”

Rose had earlier said: "It’s no secret that I’ve been away from football. I’ve deliberately not watched any football, I didn’t watch the World Cup.

“It was only until the other night, I watched City in the Champions League. Watching it, listening to the music, I thought, ‘OK, I miss it’.

“I haven’t been in this stadium for a long time. The feeling of, you know… I love football. It’s a lot to do with the atmosphere. Just seeing how they played football, that feeling after the three points, it’s just re-ignited some feelings within myself.”
