Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Cristian Stellini as interim manager after their embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United.
Spurs were handed their heaviest league defeat since 2013 by Newcastle on Sunday as they suffered a damaging blow to their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League. The result leaves Spurs six points adrift of the top four with just six matches remaining and having played more matches than every team above them, except for Arsenal.
Sunday's loss also proved the final nail in the coffin for Stellini, who has now left his role as interim boss after just four matches in charge.

"Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see," read a statement from chairman Daniel Levy. "We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.
"Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well."

The club has also confirmed Ryan Mason has been appointed head coach 'with immediate effect', adding the former Spurs midfielder "knows the club and the players well". Stellini only took up the role in March, replacing Antonio Conte on a deal until the end of the season following his compatriot's sacking.
Mason, 31, was previously named interim manager of the club in April 2021 following Jose Mourinho's dismissal from the helm. His senior management debut ended in a 2-1 win over Southampton, and fans will hope for an identical impact when he leads the squad at home to FA Cup finalists Manchester United on Thursday.

Stellini had been Conte's assistant at Spurs, taking charge of several matches whilst the former manager recovered from gallbladder surgery in Italy.
Spurs picked up just four points from their four matches under Stellini, which included a draw with strugglers Everton and defeats to both Bournemouth and Newcastle. Their only win, a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, came in a match marred by controversial VAR decisions.
A 3-2 loss to the Cherries marked Tottenham's first home defeat since January, bringing an end to a fortress-like run that had provided subtle comfort amid their struggles in recent months. Mason will seek to restore some of that confidence at home to Red Devils this week, with Erik ten Hag's side having crumbled 3-0 at Sevilla in their last road run-out.
