Jonjo Shelvey told to 'stay away' from Liverpool game after furious row with manager

Reports suggest Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper told Jonjo Shelvey to 'stay at home' after their 'furious row' during a team meeting.

Nottingham Forest omitted former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from their matchday squad at Anfield due to a 'furious row' with manager Steve Cooper.

That's according to bombshell reports from The Telegraph after Shelvey was told to 'stay at home' by Cooper despite mounting injury problems for the Midlands side. Liverpool won that Premier League meeting 3-2 with goals coming from Diogo Jota (2) and Mohamed Salah.

Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White were on target for Forest - missing as many as nine players through injury - while Shelvey was also deemed unavailable for selection by Cooper after the on-loan Newcastle star clashed with him at a team meeting.

As per Telegraph reports, Shelvey was due to be named on the substitutes bench at Anfield and the 31-year-old took exception to that decision. The article states Cooper had been 'unhappy' with the midfielder and his performances in training during the build-up.

Shelvey, who has been nursing a calf injury, went unused against Manchester United in Forest's last game as Cooper's side continue to battle against relegation. He was not recalled to the starting XI for Liverpool either and that call ultimately sparked up 'a confrontation' between the two.

Cooper advised Shelvey to 'stay at home' and his proposed spot in the matchday squad on Saturday went to another player despite Forest being hit harder than most when it comes to injuries. Indeed, they were unable to call upon Cheikhou Kouyate, Gustavo Scarpa, Serge Aurier, Chris Wood, Willy Boly, Dean Henderson, Giulian Biancone, Omar Richards and Ryan Yates for the game.

Forest return to Premier League duty against Brighton on Wednesday night (7.30pm). However, it has not yet been confirmed whether Shelvey, who joined Forest on loan from Newcastle during the January window, will return to the fold. He played 69 games in all competitions for Liverpool between 2010 and 2013.
