Nemanja Vidic insisted Erik ten Hag and Man United must sign the 'right players' in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic believes Erik ten Hag needs to recruit the right players for the right positions in order to get the Reds challenging at the top end of the table once again.

Ten Hag has enjoyed a productive debut season at Old Trafford after being appointed manager last summer. The Dutchman guided United to their first trophy since 2017 after winning the Carabao Cup in February, and the Reds will have the chance to lift the FA Cup in June.

The Reds signed five permanent players last summer, with Antony, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez all joining the club. Given the club's financial situation, Ten Hag was only able to make three loan additions in January. However, he is expected to strengthen with reinforcements at the end of the campaign.

MEN Sport previously reported Ten Hag wants at least two significant signings in the summer to maintain United's momentum next season. It is understood the Reds boss has prioritised a new goalscorer, while a midfield reinforcement is also high on the list.

Discussing United's progression as a club in recent months, former centre-back Vidic praised the work of Richard Arnold, while also commending the hierarchy for making 'strong' decisions in certain situations.

"I think Richard Arnold is doing well in this short period of time, I think he or the sport side made a good decision to bring Ten Hag in and settle the situation," Vidic said on Vibe with Five. "Certain things they did in the last six months or year show the club is strong when deciding on when they want to do something, so I think in terms of that I see some improvement."

Asked about his opinion on United's long-term plan, he added: "Long term of course, but not long term... next 100 years. I think you have to bring the right players in the right positions, I said that before. Centre-back... that player wins you the trophies.

"When you think about next season, how many goals do you have to score to win the title? Who is going to score the goals? You have to have clean sheets, so you have to find the balance. You have to find the balance between scoring goals and playing defensively well.

"That's the decision of the coach and the club to find that, it's not easy, especially in the time when you have a lot of money to bring someone [in]."

The Manchester Evening News reported last month that Ten Hag is intent on signing Tottenham and England talisman Harry Kane as he approaches the final year of his contract.
