Stephen Glass recovers from Aberdeen flop to mastermind minnows US Cup triumph over Atlanta United

The ex-Dons manager is now back in charge Stateside and he's etching his name into the history books.

Ex-Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass

Former Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass masterminded a huge cup shock when he guided his Memphis 901 minnows to a win against his former club Atlanta United and made American history.

The former Pittodrie boss was axed by the Dons in February last year and is now back in charge in the States at USL Championship level. His side were drawn against Aberdeen 's linked club Atlanta United - where Glass was interim manager three years ago and also managed their reserve side - in the third round of the US Open Cup, America's national cup competition.

But they stunned the big-spending Georgia side, who were without former Celtic star Giorgos Giakoumakis, who has scored in his last five games for his new club and had a hamstring strain. Glass' side shocked Atlanta with a 2-1 extra time win - the first time they had ever defeated an MLS side and the earliest exit in the tournament's history for Atlanta.

Glass said: "I think anytime you achieve firsts with a club, you have got to be happy. The boys have been here for a number of years and they want to grow as a club. We showed that we are more than capable of going toe-to-toe with them and we deserved to win."

Stunned Atlanta boss Gonzalo Pineda said: "We weren't ready for the battle. I felt that Memphis were more ready for the fight. They were trying to win duels and do everything they could to put pressure on us."
