Morgan Sanson joined Strasbourg on loan in January after struggling to earn consistent minutes on the pitch for Aston Villa since his arrival from Marseille back in 2021, and the midfielder is enjoying a new lease of life back in France.

Sanson has started 12 matches for Strasbourg and has missed just one game in the second half of the campaign under manager Frederic Antonetti. He has recorded two assists in that time and has completed more than 65 minutes in eight of his matches.

Before joining Strasbourg, Sanson had started just three Premier League games since the start of last season and played under 400 minutes of top-flight football in that time. He joined Villa for £16 million in January 2021, but it's unlikely that he will have a future at Villa Park.

Emery wants to add further depth to his midfield this summer, with Giovani Lo Celso and Matteo Guendouzi of interest to the Spaniard. Sanson didn't start a single league game under Steven Gerrard or Emery before the January window opened, but did feature in two matches prior to his loan switch.

He played 60 minutes in Villa's embarrassing FA Cup exit to Stevenage in January and scored his first goal for the club in the first half. Emery then brought Sanson off the bench in the 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Before his move to Strasbourg, Emery said: "Sanson for me is a very good player. He understands very good how we want to play and he has the skill to do it. But he has to play in a team to be consistent, trying to play more and here it’s difficult to give him it - he is as well finding something to leave."

Sanson's performances for Strasbourg haven't gone unnoticed after L’Equipe named him one of the ‘top’ signings of the January transfer window in Ligue 1.
