Italian coach Christian Stellini made a strong case for being the Premier League's worst ever interim manager, after his sacking on Monday night.  

The 48-year-old led the team for just four games, since taking over from Antonio Conte, before being dismissed in a 163-word statement on the club website.

A catastrophic 6-1 defeat at the hands of fellow Champions League contenders Newcastle spelled the end of the Italian's stint in north London.

However, despite his embarrassing stint in the Spurs dugout, Stellini might not actually be the worst caretaker manager to step foot in the Premier League. 

And so, here, Mail Sport has taken a look at seven of the worst interim coaches to take charge in England's top-flight.

JOE KINNEAR - Newcastle (September 2008-February 2009)

Newcastle's appointment of Joe Kinnear as Newcastle manager in September 2008 can be seen as one of the first instances of an interim coach in the league.

Following the surprise resignation of Kevin Keegan, Kinnear was called in to take charge of the Magpies until the end of the October but would end up staying longer.

And he quickly made a name for himself within the league, after launching a foul-mouthed tirade on reporters within his first week in the job.

In the first five minutes of an interview with assembled national media, he swore over 50 times before proudly announcing he would no longer speak to them.

And, if his antics off the pitch weren't bad enough, the Tyneside club were also struggling on it during Kinnear's time.

During his 23 matches in charge, the Magpies won just four, lost nine and drew the rest, which saw them plummet into the Premier League's relegation zone.

He would eventually have to step away from the role due to health concerns, as the club confirmed he would need a heart bypass operation, in February 2009.

ALAN SHEARER - Newcastle (April-May 2009)

After Kinnear left Newcastle for medical reasons, club chairman Mike Ashley turned to Magpies legend Alan Shearer. 

The Premier League's all-time top goalscorer stepped into the role shortly after Kinnear was forced away from football, with hopes he could save their season.

However, those hopes were short-lived, as Shearer took charge of the Magpies for just eight games. And, in that time, Newcastle would go on to win just one of those fixtures.

The string of poor results, coupled with the abysmal results under Keegan and Kinnear, saw Newcastle get relegated for the first time since 1993.

STEVE KEAN - Blackburn (December 2010-January 2011)

Former Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean is yet another figure from football who will be remembered for the things he got wrong, rather than right. 

Kean, who now coaches Hibernian's academy side, took charge of Rovers on an interim basis until the end of the season after Sam Allardyce's departure in December 2010. 

A month later he was rewarded with a deal until June 2013.

Rovers ended up finishing the 2010-11 season in 15th, after an 11-match winless run saw them drop considerably down the Premier League table. 

Kean would keep his role for the next season but his luck would eventually run as out with Rovers winning just eight matches in their next top-flight campaign.

The results under Kean in 2011-12 would see the Lancashire side relegated to the Championship, where they have failed to return to the Premier League.

JOHN CARVER - Newcastle (January-June 2015)

Former Newcastle boss John Carver was the self-proclaimed 'best coach in the league' but, in actuality, was one of the worst to ever coach in the top-flight.

Carver was called in on two occasions to take charge of the Magpies on an interim basis, with his most notable stint coming after Alan Pardew's sacking in January 2015.

Carver was appointed on an end-of-season contract at St James’ Park but nearly saw that terminated early, after they endured a dismal run of form in the league. 

From his 20 matches in charge, Carver would lead Newcastle to victory in just three of those, as they narrowly avoided relegation from the top-flight that season. 

During that stint, Carver oversaw a run of eight successive league defeats for the Magpies, which stands as their record in the Premier League era.

TERRY CONNOR - Wolves (February-May 2012)

After Mick McCarthy was sacked as Wolves boss in February 2012, Terry Connor stepped in to try and clean up the mess that had been made. 

However, instead, he suffered a torrid stint as Wolves' interim coach and oversaw their relegation from the Premier League that season.

Connor took charge of 13 matches at the club and won none of them. Yes, none of them. Not a single one. 

He ended up drawing four and losing nine of those matches, as Wolves ended up sinking into the Championship for the following season.

FRANK LAMPARD (April 2023-)

Not much needs to be said about the fortunes of Chelsea's current interim manager, Frank Lampard.

The club legend returned to the west London dugout earlier this month, after the sacking of Graham Potter, but has struggled since his appointment.

In his five matches so far, Lampard is yet to find a victory - having suffered defeats to Wolves, Brighton, Real Madrid (both home and away) and Brentford. 

They've managed to score just one goal in those matches, which came against Brighton, and have conceded nine, in comparison. 

He'll have an opportunity to amend that record on Tuesday night, when his side take travel to bitter rivals Arsenal in a Premier League encounter.

CHRISTIAN STELLINI (March-April 2023)

The Italian's tenure as interim manager in north London was as short-lived as many had come to expect, after a string of worrying results. 

Stellini took charge as first-team coach last month, after Antonio Conte's dramatic departure which followed after his explosive rant about Tottenham's players. 

Conte questioned the 'fire' inside his players and it's an issue that his compatriot Stellini quickly discovered as well. 

In his four matches in charge, the Italian managed just one win for Spurs, which came as a 2-1 victory over Brighton this month. 

Aside from that, they suffered defeat to relegation candidates Bournemouth and the humiliating 6-1 loss at Newcastle, which led to the Italian's eventual departure.
