But SunSport understands City are very keen on landing the 26-year-old this summer.

And the Ashton Gate club, who Johnson bossed for four years, are ready to ramp up their interest in the coming weeks.

Johnson, meanwhile, hopes his side are hitting their stride at the perfect time as they close in on Europe AND Hearts.

Goals from Elie Youan and Will Fish saw them move three points clear of Saints and just one back of the Jambos in fourth.

He said: "Overall it's a great win for us, it's an important win because of that fifth place but also we're now chasing down the pack and everybody ahead of us.

"I was really pleased with the three points; I thought we made hard work of it in the second half.

“We should have had more control than we did.

“But in saying that we continued to work hard, we shuffled the pack and changed the shape to cope with a St Mirren side who were throwing caution to the wind.”

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson was delighted with his side’s response after their poor start.

He said: “Two individual errors have cost us and unfortunately that happens.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb.

“But the response was terrific. It was all I could ask of them and for me we should have taken something from the game.

“There are 12 points still to play for. We can pull that back very quickly.

“Our chances will be good if we play like we did for 60 minutes. If we play like we did at the start they won’t be very good.”

Elsewhere, former Celtic starlet Liam Morrison has taken his biggest step yet towards a first team breakthrough at Bayern Munich.

The 19-year-old defender was named on the bench for Die Roten's Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen, the first time he'd been named in a matchday squad.

It comes a few weeks after he penned a two-year contract extension with the Germain giants.
