I don't like Mondays! Dean Smith cites Bob Geldof's Boomtown Rats as struggling Leicester aim to shrug off Fulham hammering against Jurgen Klopp's high-flying Liverpool

Dean Smith channelled his inner Bob Geldof as he aims to rescue Leicester from a seemingly inevitable slide into the Championship.

The Foxes face another Monday night fixture – this time against Liverpool at King Power Stadium – after their 5-3 hammering at Fulham on May 8.

Leicester are two points adrift of safety and the gap could be greater by the time they face Liverpool, will their rivals playing on Saturday and Sunday. 

In a high pressure situation, Smith sought to lighten the mood by citing Geldof’s band The Boomtown Rats ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’.

‘Last Monday was our Boomtown Rats’ day, hopefully it won’t be this time,’ he said. ‘When I came in five games ago, we had been written off. Then Leeds and Everton were written off. The game can change very quickly.

‘When you’re conceding as many goals as we are you feel like the world’s against you. Monday was a blow and only after this game will we know how big a blow it was.

‘I’ll take the experiences I have had before I this situation and pass that on the players, to try to help them. None of the players want to be in this position.’

Smith was appointed a month ago following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers but Leicester remain deep in trouble.

Supporters are becoming increasingly angered with what they see as a lack of commitment, with eight out of contract and others expecting to be sold.

But Smith insisted: ‘None of the players want to be in this position and they’re searching for answers to appease the fans. All the lads care. They just show it in different ways.’
