Ally McCoist serves up Dundee masterplan – and how Gary Bowyer could have avoided the axe with email excuse

ALLY McCOIST was shocked to see Gary Bowyer leave Dundee just an hour after being named cinch Championship manager of the year.

But the cheeky BT Sport pundit claims the axe could have been avoided - if he'd used an infamous email excuse.

McCoist hasn't forgotten the carnage when an email vote was stuck in the Dee's spam filter three years ago as clubs decided on the future of the league during Covid.

And he suggested that very scenario could have worked in Bowyer's favour just days after landing the second-tier title.

He took aim at the connectivity on Tayside with his tongue firmly in cheek.

But he was serious when he expressed his shock at the turn of events at Dens Park.

He said: "I don’t think Gary Bowyer should have left – he should just have said he didn’t get the email.

"He should just have said 'I didn’t get the email, I’m not leaving' and everyone in Dundee and Scottish football would have understood that.

"Because as we all know the email system up in Dundee doesn’t work too well so he should just have said 'I didn’t get the email'."

The timing shocked Scottish football and just 63 minutes separated his award announcement from his departure one.

But tensions had been strained in the City of Discovery for a while longer.

Chris Sutton responded on BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra: “Wasn’t it odd that Dundee’s twitter account was congratulating Gary Boweyer and the next second saying he was sacked.

"It's absolutely ridiculous the whole thing. There was obviously some sort of disagreement and he’s gone.

"It doesn’t bode well for Dundee because they've worked hard to get back up and now they're in complete disarray.

"What a mess - they should be celebrating."

Ally added: “We should be sitting talking about Dundee, patting them on the back for a wonderful season – congratulations and looking forward to next season back in the top flight.

"Here we’re not, and we’re talking about the removal of a successful manager and bizarre scenes."
