Davidson has been the leading contender to replace sacked Gary Bowyer.

And a deal is close to being struck which will see the 46-year-old lead the Dark Blues into the Premiership next season after their promotion from the Championship under Bowyer.

Davidson has only been out of work a month having been axed by the Perth Saints after three hugely successful years on the job.

He guided the club to Scottish Cup and League Cup glory in his first season in charge.

Dundee now hope he can work that magic in their return the top flight.

The Dark Blues’ technical director Gordon Strachan is behind the appointment with the full support of managing director John Nelms.

They were inundated with applications for the position but former Blackburn, Leicester, Preston and Scotland defender Davidson was always their No1 target.

They met for talks throughout the last week with Davidson deciding in the last 24 hours he was ready to accept their offer.

Barring any last minute hitches over the agreement an announcement is expected today.

It’s understood that Davidson will be allowed to bring in his own coaching team, with the club’s current backroom staff set to make way.

Bowyer departed Dundee just an hour after he was announced as the Championship Manager of the Season and just days after promotion was secured.

He revealed his disappointment at his departure in the days that followed.

Bowyer said:  "I am saddened and disappointed not to have the chance to lead the team in the Scottish Premiership next season.

“I have loved my time at Dundee and was excited at the prospect of breaking into the top 6.

“I will miss living in ‘the ferry’ and Scotland, which is such a beautiful country.

"Winning the Championship last Friday was an incredible night and to also be named Championship Manager of the Season was very humbling.

“I undoubtedly share both achievements with my staff and players who worked hard and showed great skill and determination to achieve promotion at the first time of asking.

"Finally to the magnificent supporters, wow, wow, wow.

“The celebrations on Friday night, the civic reception at the weekend and the reception you gave me on the awards evening will live with me forever.
