Tony Adams has insisted a lack of squad depth is to blame for Arsenal's failure to win the Premier League title this season. 

Mikel Arteta's side fell to their second consecutive defeat in a week against Nottingham Forest to end their title hopes and hand the big prize to Manchester City. 

Adams says the Gunners' lost the title three months ago but praised manager Mikel Arteta for getting the 'most' out of his team.   

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Arsenal captain said: 'If there's one thing I'd go for is a little bit more rotations. 

'We've depended on Saka and Martinelli for most of the season. They could have given Emile (Smith Rowe) more time. We need them (Saka and Martinelli) at the end of the season. We'll always going to need them to get over the line.

But Adams praised Gunners boss Mikel Arteta for getting the 'most' out of his team this season

'I've been waiting for the team to do errors but they weren't coming. There was a stable back four. The goalkeeper was looking confident. The midfield balance was perfect. We had it going on. 

'But as soon as the resources ran out, couple of injuries, people lost their form, it didn't work. I think it was lost two, three months ago. I think they've run out of steam. 

'This side has been brilliant. No one expected this. They've done brilliant and Arteta is hurting. He's got the most he possibly could out of those bunch of players and that's all you need as a coach.' 

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher mirrored Adams' views as he insisted Arsenal need more quality in their squad to catch up to Man City. 

'When you look at Arsenal's first 11, it's not a million mile away from what we've seen from Man City, they play a similar sort of style,' Carragher said. 

'Saka has played every game. Some of your top players can't play all the time. Kevin De Bruyne doesn't play every game for City and for me he has been the best player in the league for the last for, five years.'

Arsenal slumped to their sixth Premier League defeat of the season at The City Ground, with Taiwo Awoniyi scoring the only goal of the match. 

It follows last week's loss at home to Brighton, meaning the Gunners will not be able to catch up to City, who have no secured a third consecutive title.
