Celtic hero Tom Rogic discovers West Bromwich Albion fate after turbulent first season

FORMER Celtic star Tom Rogic is a free agent again after West Brom announced his release.

The Baggies snapped up the Aussie 12 months ago after the Hoops surprisingly released him from his contract a year early - after a season where he earned a PFA Scotland player of the year nomination.

That was originally on a one-year-contract - with the club having the option of a further 12 months.

But they've chosen to waive those rights, as they announced that he was leaving the club.

Rogic, who signed in September 2022, scored twice in 23 games across all competitions last season.

There were brief concerns over the player's welfare last summer after the Australian national team boss Graham Arnold told of how he was worried about the former Celtic star after he sent him a text to which he didn't receive a reply.

Hoops gaffer Ange Postcoglou quashed those thoughts however and insisted he WASN'T concerned for his former player - because he knew he was a quiet man anyway.

He said: “I think Tom Rogic is fine. Has anyone spoken to him? No one spoke to him when he was here for ten years either. That’s Tom!

“I’d be actually more concerned if he was out there talking to people. Leave him alone, he’s fine.

“Tom will get his next move done and I’m sure he’s in a great place. I haven’t been in contact with him, but the people I know say that he’s got no problems.”

Instead Postecoglou snapped up his Australian team-mate Aaron Mooy.

But Rogic's future is back up in the air after he was one of a number of stars released as WBA confirmed their retained and released lists following the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign.

A statement read: "The Baggies are in talks with first-team defender Erik Pieters over a new deal, while goalkeeper Ted Cann has earned a one-year extension to his current contract, which now runs until June 2024.

"PL2 quartet Jamie Andrews, Mo Faal, Aaron Harper-Bailey and Brad Foster, as well as second-year scholars Fenton Heard, Akeel Higgins, Layton Love and Narel Phillips, have all received offers to remain with the club.

"But three senior players will be leaving The Hawthorns this summer.

"Long-serving club captain Jake Livermore departs following six-and-a-half years in B71, and he said goodbye to Baggies fans earlier this month via an open letter.

"Tom Rogic and Kean Bryan are also leaving the football club.

"Former Celtic midfielder Rogic, who signed in September 2022, exits having scored twice in 23 games across all competitions last season and Bryan departs after making three appearances in two years at The Hawthorns.

"Youngsters Quevin Castro, Rico Richards, Ramello Mitchell, Cianole Nguepissi, Sammy Okoka, Sam Oluwatobi, Beau Hudd, Tobias Hurlock, Femi Olofinjana, Archie Oliver and Jesse Wangusi are also set to leave the Baggies when their current contracts expire.

"The club would like to thank all departing players for their efforts during their time at The Hawthorns and wishes them every success in the future."
