Chris Smalling reflects on "disappointing" night for Manchester United

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling reflects on a disappointing night after they are beaten 2-1 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

Chris Smalling has lamented a disappointing evening after Manchester United slipped to a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the first match of their Champions League campaign this evening.

Memphis Depay opened the scoring against his old side, but goals from Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh gave the Dutch champions the points in Group B.

However, the game was overshadowed by what appeared to be a serious injury to Luke Shaw who was withdrawn on a stretcher in the first half, and Smalling admitted that it was a night to forget for all concerned.

BBC Sport quotes Smalling as saying: "I didn't see [the Luke Shaw injury] but a few of the players witnessed it, it was very sad and we are trying to find out how he is.

"We missed that cutting edge in the final third. In the first half they scored from their only chance and they punished us on the break. It's a very disappointing night. We've got a lot to learn."

United return to action when they visit Southampton on Sunday.
