Ex-Rangers star Calvin Bassey ‘set for huge move to English Premier League’

FORMER Rangers defender Calvin Bassey could be on the move - just 12 months after signing a record-breaking deal with Ajax.

The defender moved to the Eredivise last summer in a record transfer sale for the Ibrox club.

Bassey was in high demand after commanding defensive performances as Rangers rampaged to the Europa League final and scooped the Scottish Cup for the first time in 13 years.

It prompted Ajax to shell out a record-breaking fee for the Nigerian international who was plucked from Leicester's academy for just £230,000.

The Dutch giants won the race for his signature - fending off SEVEN clubs including Brighton who were keen on the defender too.

But after an up and down season in the Eredivise the Seagulls are ready to move again, according to Italian outlet CalcioMercato.

They say Roberto de Zerbi's side - with ex-Ger Davie Weir as technical director - have been trailing the Italy-born defender again for months and are looking to quickly arrange a deal.

Bassey could cost close to what Ajax's initial outlay was last year with a fee of between €15m and €20m suggested.

Rangers did insert a 10 percent sell-on clause within the £19.6m deal - which had other add-ons totting up to a potential £23m fee.

The Seagulls are also said to be in the market for another ex-Ibroxstar.

We told how Bayern Munich believe they can DOUBLE the arranged transfer fee they had agreed with Rangers, by selling the USA playmaker to the English Premier League.

Brighton and Brentford are believed to be in the market for Tillman who scored 12 times in 43 appearances for the Gers last season.

Now the Bundesliga club now hope to spark a lucrative bidding war south of the border and will hold out for much more than they were willing to part with Tillman 12 months ago.

Rangers know there’s no chance of the midfielder, who impressed during his loan but saw his season cut short by injury in the spring, coming back to Glasgow for a second stint.

And now they’ll have to watch as what looked like a bargain buy for them is shipped to the highest bidder in England

Gers gaffer Michael Beale wanted Tillman back but has swiftly moved on by pursuing other targets.

Cremonese striker Cyriel Dessers is closing in on a £4 million switch which should be completed this week, joining summer signings Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell, Jack Butland and Abdallah Sima
