Leon Balogun in talks over shock Rangers return as Michael Beale steps up transfer interest after Leon King blow

LEON BALOGUN could be set to make a shock return to Rangers — with Leon King facing a lengthy injury lay-off.

SunSport understands the Ibrox club are in talks with stopper Balogun, 35, over a one-year deal.

It comes as centre-back King was ruled out for “a significant period” with an ankle injury.

Balogun was one of Steven Gerrard’s title winners from 2021. He left Gers last summer to join QPR.

But he’s now a free agent with Michael Beale interested in offering him a dream move back to the club.

The German-born ace was gutted to leave Gers when his last contract expired.

At the time, he said: “For me it was a sad departure from Rangers.

“I loved the club and I really got infected by the Blue Fever, and that’ll be for life.

“It’s not that I regret being at QPR now but it was a heartbreak for me to leave Rangers.

“It was because I did not leave Rangers, I was released. That’s the fair way to put it.

“And I did not really expect it.

“At one point down the line I got prepared for it, but I still not expect it.”

Beale was already looking to bolster his defence this summer.

He targeted £2million-rated Arsenal stopper Auston Trusty, but Rangers failed to get that deal over the line.

Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo was also linked with the Ibrox outfit.

Connor Goldson is returning from injury, with Ben Davies’ future at Gers uncertain and Filip Helander and James Sands no longer at Ibrox.

And with Scotland Under-21 star King now crocked, gaffer Beale is keen on bringing Balogun back.

A club spokesman said: “Leon suffered a contact injury to his ankle at the club’s pre-season training camp in Germany on Monday which will rule him out for a significant period of time.
