Former Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri showcased his quality as he capped a superb free-kick routine for Chicago Fire.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a successful three years on Merseyside under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and ending the Reds' 30-year wait for a league title in 2020.

Shaqiri's time at Anfield came to an end in 2021 as he swapped the Premier League for France's top-flight, signing for Lyon. Although before long, he was on the move again as he made the move to the MLS where he penned terms with the Fire.

The Switzerland international only scored one free-kick for the Reds in their 7-2 win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup. At Solider Field on Wednesday night, he rolled back the years by rounding off a superb, clever set-piece move.

Shaqiri's contribution rounded off a perfect evening for Frank Klopas' side in a 3-0 win over CF Montreal.

The 31-year-old stood over the free-kick outside the box catching their opponents off guard as he played a short one-two with Maren Haile-Selassie before curling into the top corner. The win took them three points clear of Hernán Losada's side.

The commentators of the encounter were loving the moment of magic from the former Red. As it happened, they said: "Something from the training ground, Shaqiri on the first time... oh what a hit!

"Xherdan Shaqiri with an outstanding strike. That's what you pay him the big money for. Three-nil to the Fire."

The commentator continued: "That's what they've been asking for all season. Xherdan Shaqiri - the ups, the downs - but there's no denying the utter world-class capability he possesses ins in full display right in front of you."

In his first season with the American outfit, it was a disappointing campaign as they finished 12th in the Eastern Conference. At the time of his arrival in the States, Shaqiri expressed his excitement at the move.

"The league [MLS] is getting better and better," he told a press conference at the time. "For me, it's a good league.

"I wanted to go away from France and the opportunity came. George [Heitz], like I said before, we were always in touch and in contact with my brother, who is my agent.
