Former Rangers ace reckons Leon Balogun’s return to Ibrox is a ‘desperate’ move

LEON BALOGUN’S return to Rangers for a second spell was one welcomed by most fans.

The popular defender has come back to Ibrox just a year after leaving for QPR to cover for injuries to Connor Goldson and Leon King.

That left only John Souttar and Ben Davies as recognised first-team options at centre back.

And Balogun, 35 has come in to help fill that void as someone fit, available and knows the club.

He’s a player that manager Michael Beale knows well with the duo together again for the third time in their careers.

But it’s not a move that’s impressed everyone.

Former Rangers defender Richard Foster wasn’t a big fan of Balogun during his first spell at the club.

And the pundit - who had two spells at Ibrox - reckons bringing him back is a move that stinks of desperation.

Asked by Radio Scotland presenter Liam MacLeod if the move was a “no-brainer”, Foster wasn’t convinced and was happy to say so.

He said: “I’m going to upset a lot of people here – but I do that no matter what I say.

“I think it’s a bit desperate from them (Rangers).

“I was never fully convinced with Balogun when he was here.

“Initially I gave him an allowance because I thought he was younger.

“I didn’t realise he was in his thirties.

“I think he makes a lot of mistakes and he doesn’t look composed when you compare him to Connor Goldson who for me is a very good defender.

“He’s composed and has a presence about him – and I don’t think that Balogun brings that.

“He brings a nervousness to the Rangers defence when he plays, from the outside looking in.”

Speaking after sealing his return earlier in the week, Balogun said: “I am just excited to be honest.

“it is still a bit unreal but it is very real, so I am just really, really happy to be back at Rangers – it feels like coming home.

“Since I have left, I have always felt a lot of appreciation and love from friends I have made in Glasgow and around the club and now that I am back it is nice to say the least.”
