You can imagine the shock that swept round Record Sport towers this morning as for a brief moment it appeared peace had broken out on the Hotline.

It came as caller Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, put down his slingshot and offered a hand of truce to Monday's contributor Paul Price after his heartfelt tribute to Graeme Souness’ charity work. He said: “Respect to Paul Price, Belfast, for ignoring Old Firm loyalty when complimenting Graeme Souness on his charity swim for Isla Grist. It brought a warm glow to a Hotline normally filled with bias. The charity work done by ex-Rangers and Celtic players should be commended and when people like Tommy Burns and Walter Smith pass away, both sides should express remorse. Well done Paul!”

Wow, was this the start of a bright new dawn, an era where both sides of Glasgow’s divide could call in with harmony in their hearts and respect for each other’s point of view? Nah, forget about it! Normal service was resumed as Muir Fulton, Ayr, came on to hit back at the criticism aimed at ex-Ger Scott Arfield over his MLS huddle snub, saying: “Hendry Moffat’s comments on Scott Arfield are a disgrace coming from a supporter of the only club in the country that doesn’t wear a poppy. Get your own house in order before you comment on any of our players!”

Joe Sneddon chipped in: “Henry Moffat needs to take his green-tinted contact lenses out. It’s his club that shows zero respect for fallen soldiers every November, that’s what he should be calling out!” Steven Hendry added: “Got to laugh at Kenny Wilson from Moffat stating Callum McGregor is the best midfielder in Scotland! Celtic have never received a single bid for a player that, to me, is a headless chicken. You can see that when he plays for Scotland alongside decent players!”

Responding for the green half of the city was Michael Emonds, Northampton, who said: “Chris Lowe says ‘only Rangers are attempting to clean up Scottish Football’. What nonsense! Celtic have been on their own for years. Remember Jim Farry blocking Jorge Cadete’s registration until after an Old Firm cup semi-final which Rangers conveniently won? And who can forget ref Dougie McDonald telling linesman Steven Craven to tell lies about a change of decision he made regarding a penalty award to Celtic? No help from any other club here either, leaving Celtic on their own as usual!”

Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “Two years ago Celtic were a fallen house of cards. They rebuilt under big Ange Postecoglou and the majority of their players now have five medals on their mantelpieces - something the Rangers players can only dream about. Celtic have a massive off-field cash back up due successful business planning. Another thing Rangers in their wildest of dreams will never achieve. Yes Celtic will sell again safe in the knowledge replacements are already there. Dream on Rangers.”

Final call goes to Allan Morrison, who said: “Can we put aside the constant Old Firm debate and marvel at the amazing Wimbledon final on Sunday when two men battled for nearly five hours with unbelievable commitment, talent, skill and fitness? What a game and what a result for young Carlos Alcaraz.” Ifonly we could Allan, if only we could…
