Allan McGregor reveals Rangers advice for life he gave Jack Butland in emotional passing of the guard

The 41-year-old called time on his storied Ibrox playing career at the end of last season and was rewarded with a sold out testimonial.

Thankful Allan McGregor admits he urged Jack Butland to seize every second of his Rangers career after the legendary keeper said goodbye on an emotional Ibrox night.

The 41-year-old called time on his storied Ibrox playing career at the end of last season and was rewarded with a sold out testimonial against Newcastle United who brought 6,000 supporters to Glasgow on Tuesday night. Eddie Howe's men came out on top but Sam Lammers netted his first Rangers goal in the 2-1 defeat. But, for many, the night was all about one man and McGregor appeared moved by the warmth given by his Ibrox public.

And the former Scotland star lifted the lid on the emotional moment he was subbed for successor Butland and the words he whispered to his successor amid a crescendo of cheers. Speaking to Rangers TV: "I did (speak with him), take it you want to know what I said, aye? I just said to him, 'Go and enjoy it mate, it's the best club in the world'. I said just go and enjoy it."

And McGregor dropped his traditional gags as he refused to rule anything out over what comes next. He added: "I don't know, I can't say a shower again because I've had that already. No, I'm not sure. It has still been early, only seven weeks. I'm not sure, we'll see what happens. Something might come up, something might not."
