Allan McGregor reveals major Rangers trophy regret as legendary keeper refuses to gloss over five-year record

The 41-year-old returned to Rangers in 2018 looking to add to the three league titles and eight cup wins.

Allan McGregor says he’ll always regret not winning more medals during his second stint at Ibrox.

The 41-year-old returned to Rangers in 2018 looking to add to the three league titles and eight cup wins he’d won first time around. But the former No.1 now hangs up his gloves having managed to lift just one more Premiership crown and a Scottish Cup in the five years since being brought back by Steven Gerrard.

And the newly-retired Ibrox icon confessed: “I wish there were more, I’m not going to lie. Without wanting to sound negative here, we have won two trophies from a possible 15 in the last five years - 16 if you include the Europa League final - and that is not enough for this club.

“At Rangers there always has to be a standard where every game and every trophy is a must-win. But winning the club’s 55th title was something very special to me and I’ll never forget that.”

McGregor received plenty of personal plaudits as he brought the curtain down on his career – with a place in the Ibrox hall of fame the most cherished of the lot.

In his programme notes for Tuesday’s Toon clash he said: “Being inducted was one of the proudest moments of my life and to have my name on the board above the marble staircase is incredible.”
