An ACL injury has forced the 37-year-old to call time on his professional career

Real Sociedad midfielder David Silva has decided to retire from football, following confirmation of a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee.

Although he is still awaiting further medical tests, the 37-year-old midfielder from the Canaries has decided to give up playing professional football, as reported last night by Cadena Ser and confirmed to EFE by sources close to the player.

Real Sociedad reported on Thursday that Silva suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee in training this week, which could keep him out of action for the whole season.

The player left training on Wednesday with discomfort in the knee and imaging tests revealed the injury to the ligament.

At 37, the injury will force Silva to hang up his boots while he was still at an excellent competitive level at Real Sociedad.

The midfielder arrived in San Sebastian on 17 August 2020 after finishing his successful career at Manchester City. He signed for two years with La Real, with the possibility of extending his contract for another season.

In that third season, he was instrumental in Real Sociedad's qualification for the Champions League, which encouraged the Canary Islander to renew his contract for another season. However, injury prevented him from playing that fourth season.

Born in Arguineguin (Gran Canaria) in 1986, David Josué Jiménez Siva, started out at San Fernando de Maspalomas, but at the age of 14 he moved to the Valencia youth academy.

In the 2004-2005 season, he played on loan at Eibar and then at Celta, this time in the Primera Division, before returning to Valencia in 2006. In the summer of 2010, while playing and winning the World Cup in South Africa, his move to Manchester City was confirmed, where he stayed for a decade.

After his time in Manchester, at the age of 34 Silva looked for a destination where he could continue to compete at the highest level and enjoy football, and at that point he came across Imanol Alguacil's attractive Real Sociedad.

With La Real he won a Copa del Rey and was instrumental in European qualification in the three seasons he played for the Txuri Urdin.

With the Spanish national team, Silva is part of the chosen group of players who have won a World Cup and two European Championships.
