Former Manchester United loanee Marcel Sabitzer has announced his departure from Bayern Munich.

The Austrian international, who joined the Reds on loan back in the January transfer window for the remainder of the 2022/23 season, has sealed a move to fellow German side Borussia Dortmund on a permanent deal. He has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Signal Iduna Park.

Sabitzer joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in August 2021 but failed to ever live up to expectations at the Allianz Arena. He scored just two goals and grabbed two assists in 54 games for the German champions.

He will be hoping to get his career back on track at Dortmund, who have signed him for a reported fee of around €19million. He has become their second midfield signing of the summer after the recent capture of Felix Nmecha from Wolfsburg.

In a heartfelt goodbye to Bayern Sabitzer took to Instagram, and wrote: "Dear Bavarian family, today it is time for me: say goodbye! It was two beautiful and intense years at @fcbayern, in which I met great people and gained special experiences.

"Thank you to everyone who has always supported me through this time! I wish the whole club only the best (on 32 matchday). Bye, take care!"

Announcing his move to Borussia Dortmund, sporting director Sebastian Kehl subsequently said: "Marcel is an experienced player who has been playing at the top international level for years. He fits the profile that we were looking for exactly: a central midfielder who will strengthen us both defensively and offensively as a box-to-box player.

"Marcel is physically strong and also carries an immense goal threat. We're convinced that he will also become an important pillar of our team thanks to his personality and will help us to be even more effective, especially in hard-fought matches."

The midfielder, who will be looking to help Austria qualify for next summer's European Championship in Germany over the next few months, made 18 appearances during his short-term stint at Old Trafford, scoring three goals and grabbing one assist. He was drafted in after Christian Eriksen suffered a serious ankle injury back in January in a 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading.

Sabitzer, who has made almost 200 career appearances in the Bundesliga, meaning he will add plenty of experience to Dortmund's midfield, did a steady job during his time in M16, so much so that United, up until recently, had not completely ruled out the prospect of signing him permanently. However, at the time, sources did indicate that a return to M16 was unlikely.

He could feature for Dortmund when they face United at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas next week.
