Wrexham match suspended as fans ordered to take cover
Wrexham's game in Philadelphia was hit but extreme weather
Wrexham's final match of their US tour against Philadelphia Union II was halted for two-and-a-half hours amid raging thunderstorms.
Spectators were ordered to leave their seats and take cover in the concourses of the stadium as the players were held inside while lightning forks lit up the sky and heavy rains pounded the ground.
The heavens opened after the match started amid extreme humidity before the game was suspended and fans were told to take cover as the host club monitored the lightning strikes.
A statement issued during the game said: "The National Weather Service is still forecasting that our current weather pattern may contain severe conditions including lightning and gusty winds. We ask that you do not remain in the open seating area but take cover along the stadium concourses."
As for the match, it ended in a 1-1 draw at Subaru Park. Tom O'Connor put Wrexham ahead after 43 minutes before Jeremy Rafanello equalised for the home side with a free-kick in first-half stoppage time. Wrexham changed their entire side for the second-half.
The Welsh club will now head home after a tour that saw them beaten 5-0 by Chelsea before thumping LA Galaxy II 4-0. They went on to beat a young Manchester United side 3-1 in a game that was marred by injury to star striker Paul Mullin, who suffered a punctured lung.
They begin their League Two campaign at home to MK Dons next weekend.
