Wout Weghorst's goodbye message to Manchester United hasn't gone down well with the club's fans.

The Dutchman, who scored just two goals in 31 appearances on loan at Old Trafford last season, uploaded a painstakingly cringey, but admittedly heartfelt, video to social media on Tuesday thanking supporters for welcoming him with open arms.

The video contained clips of him in action for Erik ten Hag's side, accompanied by a toe-curling version of John Denver's 1971 smash hit Take Me Home, Country Roads, titled Take Me Home, United Road (there really isn't enough vomit in the world).

"Dear Man United fans, thanks for everything," Weghorst began. "I really enjoyed every single second at this club, from winning silverware to scoring my first goal against [Real] Betis at Old Trafford.

"Dreams came true, unbelievably proud to wear the badge," he continued, "I wish you all the best for the future. Man United fans, thank you very much."

In spite of his sweet words, fans thought Weghorst's message was "bizarre", particularly as he'd made next to no impact at the club during his half-season stint.

"Bizarre on several levels. The timing mostly, but just so cringe," one supporter tweeted. Another said: "Bro scammed us for a season and making a tribute like he won us the treble."

A third added: "Oh I didn’t even notice he was here considering he did f**k all," while a fourth wrote: "Y'all acting as if he was that important [laughing face emoji]. A goodbye message from a mid player is insane."

Weghorst was parachuted into Old Trafford in January as a temporary replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been released by the club just before the World Cup in November, but he looked a total misfit in United's fluid, interchanging attack and ended the campaign with zero goals in 17 Premier League appearances.

The 31-year-old, who is now back at parent club Burnley, will get the chance to face his former team-mates when United visit Turf Moor on September 23 - though he's also being strongly linked with loan move to Bundesliga club Hoffenheim.
