Tom Cannon’s loan exit has been put on hold until Everton can get deals for new strikers done.

The ECHO understands that the 20-year-old from Aintree was due to be at Preston North End today to seal a season-long switch to the Championship side.

But Goodison Park chiefs will not give the green light on Cannon’s return to Deepdale – he netted eight goals in 21 games for Ryan Lowe’s side in the second half of last season – until they are able to bring in additional recruits up front themselves.

Everton are in the final stages of completing a move for Sporting CP striker Youssef Chermiti with the 19-year-old’s medical reported as being booked in for today.

After missing out on previous target El Bilal Toure who moved from Spanish side Almeria to become Rasmus Hojlund’s replacement at Serie A outfit Atalanta when the Dane moved to Manchester United in a deal worth up to £72million, the Blues interest in Chermiti became public on July 31, but the move has been delayed due to wrangles over the amount for a potential future sell-on fee for the Lisbon-based outfit who were beaten 1-0 by Sean Dyche’s men in their final pre-season friendly last Saturday.

Leicester City’s Patson Daka and Hugo Ekitike of Paris Saint-Germain are also on director of football Kevin Thelwell’s radar but reports that Everton have lodged a £34million offer for the latter were today rejected by club insiders.

Everton begin their 2023/24 Premier League campaign at home to Fulham on Saturday and although Dominic Calvert-Lewin was fit again to lead the line against Sporting and bag the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, he and Neal Maupay netted just one goal apiece between them from open play last term over a combined 47 matches while the team as a whole scored 34 times in 38 games.

So far, the Blues’ only new faces are 38-year-old Ashley Young – a free agent after his contract with Aston Villa expired – and on-loan Villarreal attacker Arnaut Danjuma who struck once in nine Premier League outings for Tottenham Hotspur last term after the north London outfit hijacked his proposed January move to Merseyside at the 11th hour.
