Everton have been drawn away to Doncaster Rovers in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The Blues will be looking to have a stronger competition than last season, after being dumped out by Premier League rivals AFC Bournemouth. Under the guise of then-manager Frank Lampard, Everton edged past Fleetwood Town.

In the last two seasons, they have failed to make it past the third round following defeat to the Cherries on the south coast last year before suffering defeat on penalties to QPR, a season earlier.

Not since 2015/16 have the Blues made it to the semi-final of the competition, where they were beaten by Manchester City across two legs, with their best showing coming in 2020/21 when late goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial broke Everton hearts in the last eight.

For manager Sean Dyche, it will be his first taste of the competition as Everton manager. During his time at Burnley and Watford, he only made it past the fourth round once, reaching the Round of 16 in his first season at Turf Moor. Since then he has only failed to make it out of the second round three times.

Meanwhile, Grant McCann’s side booked their place in the second round with a 2-1 win at Hull City earlier this week, as suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Harrogate Town in their opening League Two game of the season on Saturday. The tie is scheduled to be played week commencing August 28.
