Ex-Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst's latest career move explained as loan move sealed

The former Man United loanee has left Burnley to join Hoffenheim on loan for the season

Former Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst has departed England for a spell in Germany with Hoffenheim as parent club Burnley were unable to make him a focal point in their team and have opted to go in a different direction.

Weghorst spent the whole of last season away from Turf Moor in two separate loan spells, firstly in Turkey at Besiktas. He then moved in January to United for the second half of the campaign.

The striker won the Carabao Cup with United, and despite his endeavour and work rate, only found the back of the net only twice in his time at Old Trafford. United did not pursue the opportunity to sign the striker on a full-time basis and he returned to Burnley.

Weghorst has departed the Clarets again though before the new Premier League season begins. He has joined German side Hoffenheim on loan for the campaign.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany admitted he likes Weghorst and got to know him well during pre-season, but ultimately, the experienced striker wants to be playing for a side which can be built around him. Burnley have opted to go in another direction and Kompany did not stand in Weghorst's way of trying to find that.

Kompany said: “I had a good time with Wout in terms of being able to get to know him, speak to him. He’s a wonderful character but we just had an honest conversation with each other and I think he’s at a stage of his career where I think he, rightly so, probably will think or feel like he has to be in a squad that can be built around him and that makes sense.

“There was coaches and other clubs willing to offer that, but in terms of where we were at, we had still different ideas and we weren’t able to commit to that. At that moment in time it was a very good and honest conversation and we said we wouldn’t stand in the way of him having the opportunity to continue to play at his age.”
