Luton Town have reportedly taken former Manchester United centre-back Axel Tuanzebe on trial.

The defender, 25, has been without a club since leaving United at the end of last season. The Reds made the decision not to renew his contract, allowing him to leave the club and start afresh.

Tuanzebe spent the second half of last season on loan at Championship side Stoke City. He joined the Potters in January and made just five appearances because of injury.

Staying fit has been an issue for the United academy graduate in recent years, restricting his progress. He spent the 2021/22 season out on loan, spending the first half of the campaign at Aston Villa and the second half in Italy at Napoli.

However, he made a combined total of just 13 appearances for the two clubs, only two of which were for Napoli. It means he has made just seven first-team appearances since the start of 2022.

Despite his recent injury problems, there has been plenty of interest in Tuanzebe this summer, including from Saudi Arabia. Premier League newcomers Sheffield United have also been heavily linked with his signature in recent weeks.

However, Tuanzebe has now reportedly been taken on trial by Luton, who are keen to add fresh faces to their ranks following their recent promotion. They have added 10 new players to manager Rob Edwards' squad so far this summer and are on the hunt for more reinforcements.

Tuanzebe, who made 37 appearances for United at first-team level, has joined the Hatters on trial with a view to being awarded a permanent contract. It is claimed that he started training with the club on Sunday.

Luton made their bow in the Premier League just over a week ago, losing their opening game 4-1 to Brighton, meaning they clearly need more defensive support. They face Chelsea next at Stamford Bridge this coming Friday.

The Hatters have already signed one former United player this summer, landing winger Tahith Chong from Birmingham City. The Reds scooped a percentage of that transfer fee after inserting a sell-on clause in the deal that saw Chong swap Old Trafford for Birmingham on deadline day last summer.
