'Patience' needed with Garang Kuol as Newcastle United star endures slow start to loan spell

Garang Kuol has endured a slow start to life away from Newcastle United

The manager of Dutch side FC Volendam, Matthias Kohler, admits patience is needed when it comes to Newcastle United loanee Garang Kuol. The Australian sensation, 18, is spending the season on loan at the Eredivisie outfit as he seeks first-team experience away from St James' Park.

Kuol's loan spell at Hearts didn't go to plan last term, with game time hard to come by at the Scottish side, and the teenager's temporary stint in the Netherlands hasn't got off to the best of starts either.

Kuol made a cameo appearance in Volendam's opening day defeat to Vitesse but failed to make the matchday squad for Saturday's 4-1 loss to Go Ahead Eagles as the club sit second-bottom of the Dutch top flight. “We have to be patient with him," Kohler said.

"That is simply the case with a young player who comes from a foreign competition. We will see to what extent and for how long he can be used."

Kuol joined Newcastle to much fanfare after excelling in his native Australia at Central Coast Mariners. A World Cup call-up with the Socceroos only heightened excitement but the disappointing Hearts spell dampened spirits somewhat.

Newcastle's loan co-ordinator Shola Ameobi and sporting director Dan Ashworth felt a move to Tynecastle last term would be the smart choice, given the Australian contingent currently playing at Hearts.

“It’s been a tough loan spell for him, but hopefully there’s some real positivity to take into the summer for him, off the back of that goal," Eddie Howe said after Kuol's Hearts loan ended. “I think it’s probably too early for him to be part of our first-team picture here next year. I think, potentially, another loan spell will do him good as he continues to develop to the pace of this league.”

Meanwhile, fellow Newcastle youngster Yankuba Minteh has enjoyed a solid start to his loan in the Netherlands, impressing at champions Feyenoord.
