Everton remain locked in talks with Southampton over a deal for Che Adams.

The Blues are seeking an experienced striker to bridge the gap between the youth of Youssef Chermiti and the quality of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. That search led them to Adams, who has been somewhat of a long-term target for the club.

Everton had a £12million bid for the Scotland international rejected by the Saints over the weekend after making the offer on Thursday. However, the ECHO understands that talks between both clubs have continued over a deal.

The Scotland international, who took part in Southampton training on Wednesday, has also been the subject of interest from both Bournemouth and Crystal Palace this summer. However, he would be keen on a move to Merseyside as he eyes a swift return to the Premier League following Southampton's relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.

Adams has just one year left on his contract at St Mary's and Russell Martin admitted on Friday that he had initially started planning for this season without the forward as he believed he was set to leave the club.

The Saints boss, however, also warned Everton ahead of his side’s Championship clash against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday that Adams will only be allowed to leave if an offer is made that matches his valuation. So far this summer, Southampton have secured huge transfer fees for Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento and James Ward-Prowse.

Asked how important the completion of a deal for Adams is following his side’s 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa, Blues boss Sean Dyche said: "The first bit of importance is we’ve got to operate with what we’ve got.

"There’s no magic wand; there never was when I got the job, and there are no shortcuts, because shortcuts in football usually cost a lot of money. We are working hard to construct deals that can affect us in a positive way."

Before he added: "These deals at the minute, I am waiting for news - any deals, that is not about Che Adams, that is any deals. We are in for a number of situations; whether they can come into fruition, I am waiting on news."

Meanwhile, Everton have not expressed an interest in signing ES Troyes AC forward Mama Balde. The 27-year-old can play across the front positions and scored 12 goals last season.

The Guinea-Bissau international has been linked with a move to Goodison Park in recent weeks. However, the ECHO understands that the Blues have not made any contact with Troyes over a deal, but the French side have received an offer for the forward from an unnamed club.
