Former Arsenal star and Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez has reportedly returned to another of his former clubs.

Sanchez, who tore up the Premier League for the Gunners but failed to rediscover that form at Old Trafford after a January 2018 swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan, has been a free agent since leaving Marseille at the end of last season.

The 34-year-old scored 18 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions for the Ligue 1 side, but they couldn't find an agreement to extend his one-year contract.

It hasn't taken too long for him to be snapped up, though - with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claiming he's signed a short-term deal with Inter Milan, who he only left last year.

Their Argentine forward Joaquin Correa, 29, has headed in the other direction, joining Marseille in a €2m (£1.7m) loan deal with a €10m (£8.6m) obligation to buy if they qualify for the Champions League.

Sanchez has taken a considerable pay cut on his last Inter contract. He was previously said to be earning €7m (£6m) per season.

That dropped to €3m-a-year (£2.6m) in France, and Inter are believed to have offered him even lower with a €2.8m (£2.4m) annual salary.

It's a far, far cry from the four-and-a-half year contract he signed for the Red Devils, which was estimated to be worth in the region of £400k-a-week.

Having scored nearly a goal every other game for Arsenal, Sanchez managed to find the back of the net just five times in 45 games for United.

His career could have been very different had be opted to join Man City instead. Pep Guardiola wanted to reunite with his former Barcelona prodigy.

Speaking recently about City's reluctance to over-spend on players, Guardiola said: “I couldn’t sit here if we spent what Chelsea spent in the last two transfer windows – you would kill me.

“We wanted [Harry] Maguire and didn’t buy him because we didn’t want to pay, we wanted [Marc] Cucurella and didn’t pay, we wanted Alexis Sanchez and didn’t pay. In the end, we will pay what is fair to do it.”
