Sheffield United striker Cameron Archer explains £18.5m Aston Villa exit

Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Cameron Archer completes his £18.5million transfer to Sheffield United

Cameron Archer insists it's important for him to play regularly in the Premier League at this stage of his career after leaving Aston Villa permanently for Sheffield United.

The Blades have signed Archer for £18.5million, but Villa negotiated a buy-back clause in the deal to retain a degree of control over the striker's future. He scored 11 goals in 20 Championship appearances for Middlesbrough last season following another successful spell in the second tier with Preston North End in 2022/23.

Villa head coach Unai Emery gave Archer the opportunity to impress in pre-season after he won the European U21 Championship with England in in July. He featured in all three of the club's Premier League Summer Series friendlies out in the USA, before he came off the bench in the club's 5-1 defeat at Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the campaign.

He was an unused substitute in the 4-0 win over Everton last weekend, but was left out of the squad that travelled to Hibernian for the first leg of the Europa Conference League play-off as he was undergoing a medical on Wednesday ahead of joining Sheffield United.

Speaking of his move to Bramall Lane, Archer said: “Everyone is happy if they are playing football regularly. That's something I want to do now.

"I think it was important to come here and look for Premier League football, that was key for me because I want to make that next step now and challenge myself. Hopefully I can do that here.

"Sheffield United have a long history of developing players in terms of playing and hopefully making better people as well.”
