Aston Villa set to complete fifth summer transfer as Barcelona agreement reached
Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Clement Lenglet is set to complete his loan switch from Barcelona
Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Clement Lenglet on loan.
The 28-year-old will become the club's fifth signing of the summer window, following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Moussa Diaby and Nicolo Zaniolo. Lenglet is now due to travel to the UK to finalise the move.
He left Barca on loan last summer to join Tottenham Hotspur for the duration of the 2022/23 campaign, and made 27 Premier League appearances for the club. The defender also featured in seven of Tottenham's eight Champions League matches last term, and scored in a 2-1 win at Marseille.
Lenglet joined Barcelona from Sevilla in the summer of 2018 after they paid the player's €35million release clause. Villa's president of football operations, Monchi, signed Lenglet for Sevilla from French club Nancy in a deal worth €5million.
He has played 160 times for Barcelona across all competitions, and has won three titles during his time in Catalonia. He will add experience and depth to Unai Emery's defensive options after the long-term injury blow suffered by Tyrone Mings.
Lenglet will be the second left-footed centre-back signed by Emery this summer, following the arrival of Torres. Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos and Calum Chambers are the other centre-backs in the squad, but Emery wants two players per position and has implemented a back-three system during pre-season.
